Music definitely plays a prominent role. I mostly listen to film soundtracks when I'm writing. This is a genre very much driven by raw emotions. It gives me the perfect sonic background to inspire those deep feelings to come out of me onto the page. It's all a bit sentimental I confess. Depending on the scene I need to write, I always have a fitting soundtrack to listen to. Music can both inspire something new, while also empower an idea already in my head. (To the left is a Spotify playlist I made for a story I'm writing.)
Inspiration can come from really anywhere, though. I'm not some wizard with supernatural powers of creativity. Just hwatching my son interact with the world even, can kindle an idea. Seeing how he discovers the world, is reminiscent of the unspoilt creativity we so fervently want to keep alive. As a writer, it's this childlike susceptibility, which is at the heart of my passion for storytelling.
Want to find inspiration? Watch a film you really like. Read your favourite novel again. Listen to your favourite music. Go out and take a walk in nature , your neighborhood, or the city. Some get inspired by the hustle and bustle of great metropolises, while others rather find a place of tranquility on the beach or in a forest.
Do you keep notebooks? Do you jot down ideas through other means? How do you find inspiration? Let me know in the comments or on social media.
